Hilltop Surfacing provide a range of services to both domestic and commercial customers. They offer a one stop solution for all their clients ground works needs including tarmac, paving, concrete etc.

Steve and Rachael Brookes set up their business partnership, Hilltop Surfacing back in 2003 initially laying patios, paths and driveways for domestic customers. This was a typical husband and wife business where Steve provided the manual work leaving Rachael to deal with the business administration. In the first three years of trading, business couldn’t have been better, their turnover doubled year on year. However, in 2008, when the recession took hold their business was also affected.

With sales and orders plummeting, Rachael contacted Business Doncaster for help and advice on how to move the business forward. Following an initial meeting with her Business Buddy whose expertise was in marketing, it was agreed that Rachael had to develop a marketing strategy and become more customer focused. A marketing strategy was soon developed and Hilltop Surfacing started to implement it. As a result, their customer base began to widen, not only were they dealing with requests for domestic work but they began to draw in contracts for commercial jobs.

Hilltop Surfacing are now wining tenders for large commercial contracts and have recently secured a large contract with Wates Construction, the company contracted to build the new Civic offices in Doncaster.

Commenting on the support they have received from Business Doncaster, Rachael said: “Our business buddy provided us with the vision and humour at a time when we most needed it. She had extensive marketing experience and expertise and pointed us in the right direction. “Like most businesses, in the midst of the recession we considered withdrawing our marketing budget but with the advice from our business buddy we became more marketing focused which I believe is what has helped us to grow. Her experience and knowledge has been invaluable” added Rachael.

Their vision is to be the best surfacing company in the North of England, open additional outlets and turnover £1m this accounting year. They are already half way to achieving their turnover target in the first three months of trading.

Due to their huge success, Rachael and Steve are in the process of developing a management structure, introducing appropriate policies and procedures, developing their current employees and expanding their workforce further, all with the support from Business Doncaster. They have recruited six new employees in the past six weeks alone and are still looking to recruit further.
