And the 400 workers at Hatfield Colliery will be masters of their own destiny as they prepare to take over ownership of the mine in an unusual partnership deal set up by City bankers and brokers.

The trust taking over the running of the pit is similar to the type of trust which manages high street stores John Lewis and Waitrose.

“It’s a good news story and we don’t get many of those in mining these days,” said Chris Kitchen, national secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers.

The news was also welcomed by Doncaster North MP Ed Miliband who said: “This is excellent news.

“Hatfield is the last operational pit in our area, so it was important that efforts were made to preserve it and save the jobs of the people employed there. I’m glad a solution has been found.”

“Communities all over the borough have a long, proud tradition of mining. It’s important that is preserved.”
